Mastiffs are probably one of the largest dog breeds. They are massive and grow to almost 27 to 30 inches in height and can weigh from 150 to 160 pounds. However, some heavier set dogs can come close to weighing 200 pounds. These dogs have been known to be around some 300 years ago. They were originally bred in Britain and have been depicted in pictures as a British soldier’s best companion on the battlefield. Despite their massive size, they also need a lot of special care and attention because Big Mastiffs Dogs are referred to as gentle giants. They are fairly easy to groom because their smooth, short-haired coat can be combed with a firm bristle brush. To bring sheen to the fur, wipe this with a piece of towel. When given the proper care, these dogs can last more than their average life span of 10 to 12 years. Their diet should consists of a variety of fresh, whole, chemical free, unprocessed food. Mastiffs basically eat raw meat, but if you want to minimize sickness and prolong their life, treat them to a healthier treat. Do not over feed them, though, because they are prone to Coronary Heart Disease, gastric torsion, ectropion, vaginal hyperplasia, elbow dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.
